Jurors resume deliberations in Fla. attorney case

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Jurors have resumed deliberations at the trial of a Jacksonville attorney charged with operating a gambling network under the guise of a veterans' charity.

Six jurors returned to the jury room Friday morning for a second day of deliberations.

Jurors must decide if attorney Kelly Mathis committed any crimes for his work with his client, Allied Veterans of the World.

Prosecutors say Internet cafes operated by Allied Veterans were a front for a $300 million gambling operation that gave very little to veterans.

Mathis has denied wrongdoing, saying he was only acting as an attorney giving legal advice.

Mathis is the first of 57 defendants to go on trial in the Allied Veterans case. The case led to the resignation of Florida's lieutenant governor earlier this year.
