ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A federal prosecutor says an Arizona inmate who escaped from prison committed "unspeakable crimes" in the killings of an Oklahoma couple who were carjacked at a highway rest area while traveling through New Mexico.
John McCluskey faces 20 counts in the 2010 carjacking and slaying of Gary and Linda Haas, of Tecumseh (teh-KUHM'-sah). He's the last of three defendants to be tried in the case. The other two pleaded guilty and will likely testify during the trial.
Prosecutor Greg Fouratt says the Oklahoma couple's annual camping trip to Colorado tragically collided with the separate journey by McCluskey, a fellow escapee, and an accomplice.
McCluskey is on trial in federal court in Albuquerque. Fouratt's opening statement will be followed by one by a defense attorney.
